Before the Storm
11" x 14"
Oil on Canvas
painted between Fall 2023- January 2024
The Maine Coast and the Atlantic Ocean, a few miles from my studio, are usually sheltered from the worst of storms, being an inner shore of Frenchman Bay. This late fall day I went painting with a friend. She settled on her motif quickly- I was unsure. I walked away from the boats and old gray pier, through an uneven small field, then climbed down a shale slope, stopping in a tiny pocket beach near two large rock formations. The tide was coming in, beach walkers came along and sat on the left hand rock. The weather changed.
Unfinished but cold, after a few hours we headed home.
This painting challenged me- it endured my struggles over several months, as I returned to it on the easel again and again.
In the interim the terrible twin ocean storms of early January demolished the beloved pier, smashing the entire structure into smithereens.
I morn the Hancock Point pier, which existed a behind me at the birth of this painting, but is gone into the sea at the completion.
