The wild flowers of summer in Maine are a symphony of colors, and extremely fun to paint. I love especially the wind; tossing petals this way and that, revealing the undersides of leaves, ruffling the grasses into an undulating sea.
Wind poses challenges for the painter outside; pushing the legs of the portable easel in the ground if possible helps, or using rocks to trap the legs. Taping the palette to the board, using tubes of paint to weight down the corners of the board helps- and expecting something will happen- the painting will blow face first into the grass, the palette will tip over along with the painting medium containers.
But the blown painting reveals a new technique, the fallen palette can be picked up.
It's all part of the creative process.
