Over time I started many paintings which either didn't work and I abandoned, or for some reason I never finished; most are on linen canvas, and have lived stacked together for many years. This week, as the snow is gone, and weather uncertain (unseasonably warm, dreary, and very brown)- I came across a painting of poppies I had begun years and years ago- I had chosen dark colors for both the flowers and the back ground, which absolutely didn't work! I had never varnished it, and used mainly turpentine for my painting medium.
Thus, I decided to repaint it, right over the original painting. "Fat over Lean" will adhere -painting medium with some oil in it - to the "lean" underpainting done with turpentine so many years ago.
Thus December Poppy Garden was finally born.
