First Snow
Oil on Canvas Board
9" x 12"
The first snow of 2023 - every twig and branch stayed decorated with several inches of snow all day on Monday, and over night a few more inches fell, as the temperature plummeted.
I hadn't painted outside in winter for several years and completely underestimated the need for many layers of clothing.
Hurrying to not lose the daylight, I painted outside without wearing my usual wool coat. After several hours my grip on the paint brushes felt awkward and the cold crept within my core.
I also struggled with the painting.
Every painting has a phase of struggle, when there are one or two good parts, but other aspects a challenge- and if one keeps going, a learning process usually occurs, and something emerges. The trick is not to hurt the good parts in fixing the challenges.
Back inside I realized how cold I was, and once warmed up, I continued working inside and the challenges were overcome.
