Lynx rufus
Oil on Canvas
20" x 27"
Lynx rufus, of the Order Carnivora. At dusk not long ago I noticed a dark large creature about 200 feet away in the field South of the studio window- I zoomed in with my cell phone and realized it was a bobcat, hunting mice. This was before the storm, and the big cat stalked mice who lived beneath the tall dead grasses. When a car passed on the road, the creature hunched low. Eventually the dark enveloped it as night fell. This painting, painted plein air after a January snow fall ( only 90 minutes of outside painting, as it was too cold!) and then painted in the studio, is my portrait of this beautiful creature who lives nearby, but is seldom seen.
