Poppy and Iris

The flower bed near the old farm at the studio. These poppies are opium poppies, and have growth there for more than 100 years, as the home was owned long ago by a sea captain. The iris were planted by my mother 60 years ago, and sadly grasses now have taken over much of the iris bed.This painting captures the flowerbed soon after the apple blossoms and lupines. I especially like painting the poppy buds, with the dash of color of petals visible between the two halves of the green bud.
