The Barrens

This painting was inspired by the viseral deep blue/purple of the mountains behind the bright red of the blueberry barrens in October.
Schoodic Mountain to the left, and Black Mountain to the right, are not one mountain range as they appear from the distance; a valley dips between.
Down through the woods beyond the field sits Little Tunk Lake, and to the right, past the edge of the canvas, sits the much bigger Tunk Lake (also known as Big Tunk).
At one time, long ago, Big Chief Camps sat at the Eastern end of Little Tunk, and higher on the land, Wickyup, the summer home of polar explorer Admiral Byrd stood for many years until it burned in 1984.
